HOW DO YOU LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF?

For some time now, I have been writing about being a Christian in the workplace but have wondered about how I am supposed to apply all these things since I am in school this year (rather than a traditional work environment). One thing that I recently realized is that we are all (workers, students, family members, etc) called to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). This is more than just reacting in love or treating each other with respect. It is those things and more. It is a proactive love. It does something, not just reacts to something. It is a love that thinks ahead, that initiates.

If we are to love others as ourselves, we have to think about how we want to be loved. I (and likely you as well) want to be known, want to be heard, want to be valued, want to matter, want my needs to be met...and so on. Why can't we start treating the people we see everyday this way? Why don't we proactively do things to show that we value them, hear them, want to know them, and realize that they matter? One example might be to simply ask them about their lives, families, goals, needs, etc? It might sound like a small thing, but its a start.

Doing this kind of love starts with you making a decision. What will you do?
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:17
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. John 14:21
