Several years ago I read a book about how to find, fix, and sell (FLIP) houses; shortly thereafter, I bought my first FLIP property. Though I am still very novice, I am on my third house and so far they have all been successful. Since I started doing this, it feels like everyone seems to know about FLIPing houses and everyone has advice for what to do and how to do it. When I ask if they have ever done a rehab, they often say something like "no, but I love watching it on HGTV."
Recently I was thinking about how it is kind of funny how so many people act like FLIPing experts, know so much about it and say they really want to do it someday but likely will never actually take the "risky" steps required to FLIP a house. Then I had a realization relating to my faith. Many Christians (including me) go to church regularly, read Christian books, and perhaps even memorize scripture, but often don't take the risky steps to do what those books are saying (this especially relates to evangelism and discipleship for me).
In the same way that many people are HGTV home FLIPing experts (but will never actually FLIP a home), many of us are "religious experts" but are not willing to "do" that practical thing that we know we are supposed to be doing.
Apparently this has been going on since the time of the first apostles; in James 4:17 we are told, "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them." This isn't to makes us feel bad for yet another sin, but to inspire us to action and actually "risk" something in obedience to God.
What is it that you know you should be, but aren't, doing? It might be reading your Bible and praying more or it could be taking the steps to meet with a friend to talk about Jesus or set up accountability. Perhaps it is making amends with someone who you have been estranged from for years, having the integrity to stand up for truth and righteousness at work or something else. Whatever it is, God is calling you to take a risk and do what you know is right; choose right now what step of obedience you can take today. "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts" Hebrews 3:15.
If more Christians would do this can you imagine what our world would look like?
